Kevin is only a few weeks older than Rocco.(Remember sharing Thai food in your studio while they rough-housed on the mats when they were little? lol)

Kevin had the world on a silver platter. Huge military college scholarship, incredible future as an officer in the Air Force. After a year and a half, he self-imploded and lost the scholarship. Was it something I did? Did I push the button too many times and cause him to change being in college? Or...was it simply the face value of what he said? "I'd rather be enlisted than an officer."

Was I crushed because I had wanted him to be an officer and give him his first salute? Yep.

Had to look back and take emotional inventory.

Kevin enlisted, and I was crushed when he left for Texas. Had a wonderful Graduation weekend with him in San Antonio. Cried getting on the jet to come home (with a bit of help from the TSA). Happy when he came home for Recruiter's Assistance and Christmas and sad again when he left for Andrews AFB. An E-ticket roller coaster, if you please.

It was then that it hit me how my Mom felt when I enlisted. "MY BABY is going away foreverrrr!"

I think a lot of it is the Maternal Instinct of protection. But.... we can't be there forever. We can't fix all the sniffles and emotional train wrecks. All we can do is be supportive. It's hard to do when it's long distance. I thought I had that figured out with my oldest son - he's almost 30. Guess not.

Ah, catharsis.CindiLouhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13123373594204576704noreply@blogger.com
